You’ve never been to Miami and are wondering how to get around Downtown Miami for free. You’ve got your Casiola vacation home, but the sites and sounds of the city are calling your name. Well, there’s no better way to get around downtown than on the Metromover, Freebee, or the Miami trolley! Sure, cabs are fine for heading out of town at night or getting around when it rains, but if you’d like a free way to explore Downtown Miami’s museums, restaurants, and parks then this is just the ticket. The Metromover
The Metromover is a free train system that travels along three loops around downtown Miami. It has 21 stations, and it’s open from 5 am to midnight Monday through Thursday and until 2 am on Friday and Saturday. The route starts at Brickell Station in the south, curves around the bay, and ends at Government Center Station in North Beach. It takes about seven minutes to get from one station to another, so it’s easy for you to check out all the different stops if you want!
The Metromover runs every 15 minutes at night, but during the day it runs every 30 minutes. On weekends, it runs even less frequently: 15 minutes between trains. And on weekdays, you’ll have to wait about five minutes before each train arrives.
How it works
There are three loops and 21 stations, so let’s break down the details:
- Inner Loop: This line takes a complete route around the business district and offers excellent connections with the other two lines. Just around the corner from the Government Center stop you can find the Miami-Dade Cultural Center, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and the Pérez Art Museum. and from the Bayfront Park stop you can get some unbeatable views of Biscayne Bay.
- Omni Loop: To head northwards, to the Omni district, you’ll have to take the train at College/Bayside Station on the Inner Loop. And on the way, you’ll pass by some places of great touristic interest, such as Freedom Tower, Bayside Marketplace, or the American Airlines Arena.
- Brickell Loop: This is the southward line, which can be taken from Third Street on the Inner Loop. On this route you can still see some of the wooden houses which formed part of the very first neighborhood in Miami, and you’ll also pass by the Miami Circle, Native American ruins that are over 2,000 years old.
Plan the Metromover on your phone
You can use the Miami-Dade Transit Tracker app to plan your trip. The app will tell you when the next train is arriving, so you’ll always know when to get on board. The app also helps with planning trips from one station to another, which is important if you want to take a bus or ride a bike instead of taking an MDT track.
The Miami trolley
The Miami trolley is an excellent free method to move about the city. These orange and green vehicles may be seen in Downtown, Brickell, Coconut Grove, Edgewater, Little Havana, Miami Beach, Wynwood, and other areas on the mainland.
On weekdays and Saturdays, trolley service begins at 6:30 am and runs until 11 pm on most routes. On Sundays, services are available from 8 am until 8 pm. The trolley can be tracked online. When you spot one, you may either try to flag it down (they won’t stop if they’re full) or find a marked stop. Once aboard, feel free to ask the driver where you should get out to get to your destination.
Freebee
Because the Freebee is relatively unknown, it is an excellent alternative, particularly in busy places such as Miami Beach. The trip is free, however, tipping is still strongly requested. Order a Freebee electric vehicle in the same way you would an Uber or Lyft. They are now present in Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Doral, Downtown, El Portal, Hialeah, Key Biscayne, and the majority of Miami Beach (download the app to view all service areas near you).
